San Juan, Puerto Rico

Glamour Shots! We all met together to debark into San Juan...around 4PM. As you can see it is raining slightly but it is still super warm.

We wanted to do a canopy tour of the rainforest, so we could zip line and rappel, but we were told (by the people wanting us to take their island tour)those weren't running because of the rain. I think we got bamboozled. Grrr.
Anyways, we took a bus tour and saw the old and new parts of Puerto Rico. I couldn't quite understand it. It looked like 75 percent of the places (commercial and residential) were uninhabited and partly demolished, yet there were signs of new construction everywhere. Except the construction looked abandoned too.

We could have done without the tour of the new city and found the Old San Juan held our interest with its beautiful architecture.

This is a statue of John the Baptist? That's what the tour guy said...I think. It is placed outside one of the main government buildings are. When the politicians come out, they see this view, where he is saying "We are watching you, you better do right."

Then as you move around him, he is saying something completely different.

This is part of the old wall that is built around a large part of the island.

The tour dropped us off to check out this old cemetery right by El Morro. We took a few pics and then RAN for the fort! We HAD to see it up close.

You can see me running across this huge grass field. I felt like I was in Ireland or Scotland. I guess it used to have parking lots and palm trees after it became part of the military, but they wanted to return it to its original "battle field."

These pictures don't do the place justice. It was so grand and amazing. I wish we could have seen the inside. Here is so me info on El Morro.

We had to run back sooooo fast. So the tour bus wouldn't leave us. They were all boarded and waiting for us. They said they had made bets on whether we'd make it and figured we would be the ones to miss the ship. Whatever.

The tour ended in Old San Juan. So beautiful. They dropped us off right in front of a Guess store. Woohoo. Duty free and tax free shopping! I should have bought these jeans! But they made my butt look big! Just kidding! Big butts are in these days!!!!

Clay should have bought this! Ha Ha!

I loved the old street signs posted in the buildings themselves.

We were in one of the stores and came across a fellow Latter Day Saint. She saw my garments when I was trying something on over my clothes. She said she was going on a mission shortly. She didn't know to where yet. She said her husband had died 2 years ago and it had been a long road but she was ready to go. She was pretty young. Cool. Anyways, she sent us to a place called Raices (roots in English) for some authentic Puerto Rican food.

They made the drinks in the back with fresh fruits. Yum! We let the waiter choose three things for us and we at those. Something similar to a roast with some root made into "mashed potatoes", deep fried pork chops, mahi mahi, and lots of plantains. Tasty.

Since Cristobal Colombus was the first to land here. They were pretty big on him, thus the statue. But we actually took a picture of it to try to capture the giant cocaroaches crawling all over it.

As we tried to embark the ship there were quite a few people begging for money. One gentlemen came up to us and said that he was from WI and that him and his father had came in on a chartered boat, walked around in the bad part of town, got jumped, dad in hospital, needed money to get a cab up to see him and bring him back. We pondered over this guy for days. We couldn't be sure if he was for real or not. Josh and Clay gave him a few bucks.
